⚠️ IP-based location is an estimate based on your provider's registration — it usually shows your ISP's city, not your exact address.
Your public IP is the address that identifies your network on the internet, assigned by your ISP. The local IP (LAN) is the internal address used by devices inside your own network (router, phone, PC), usually something like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.
It's the inverse of a normal DNS lookup: instead of converting a name into an IP, it converts an IP into a hostname (PTR). Not every IP has a reverse record configured — residential ISPs often don't set this up.
IP geolocation doesn't use GPS — it's based on the IP block registered by your ISP, which may be centralized in a different city or even a different state.
